What better way to celebrate world Ocean day than with a small bunch of local children and a rummage around in a rock pool?

We took the Seaham Beach Rangers, our very own coastal custodians, along to the Red Acre beach via Bessie's Hole and we carried out a rock pool survey. Spotting, collecting and identifying all manner of marine life in our lively rock pools.

From the little known Green Leaf Worm to the old favourite Limpet, we identified lots of different species which we will load on to the national database for rock pool citizen science, as our mini biodiversity rockpool survey. This will support the understanding of species distribution around the UK.

Heads down and bums up, carefully lifting and lowering the stones in the rockpool, mindful that it is host to many creatures and a habitat in its own right. We play visitors to these homes and must treat them with the respect we would treat our friends house.
Carefully catching what we can in buckets to identify, photograph, and later record and release.
As the exertions of exploring became too great for one of our more senior Rangers, the opportunity was taken to oversee the bags and recover in the sunshine.

We at The Sea We See are supporting Seaham Town council in their declaration for Ocean Recovery, known as the #theMotion4theOcean. We are working towards increasing the local understanding of our marine world, our impact on it and how to take care of it. We are using fun activities for all the family as we explore our diverse coastal space.
By having our species distribution of plants and creatures surveyed, we can set a baseline to know what we have now and how it may change in the future. Our coast has changed so much in the last 20 years.
Lets make learning fun and protection a desire. Join us on our next Coastal Rangers adventure. check out the events on this page.
